Potter’s Lane Receives International Honor from Builder Magazine

SVA Recognized for Innovative Affordable Housing for Veterans

Santa Ana, CA, September 12, 2017 – Builder Magazine has announced that Potter’s Lane, designed by SVA Architects, Inc., is a Merit Award winner in the Affordable Housing category of its 2018 Builder’s Choice & Custom Home Design Awards. Potter’s Lane, located at 15171 Jackson St. in Midway City, CA, provides permanent housing for chronically homeless veterans using upcycled steel shipping containers. The eco-friendly, affordable housing project helps address the homeless crisis facing much of Orange County. Receiving a Builder’s Choice & Custom Home Design Award recognizes that Potter’s Lane is a model for affordable housing nationwide.

Potter’s Lane is a unique housing development made of modified-steel shipping containers, which were transformed into fully functional and aesthetically pleasing 480-square-foot homes for 15 chronically homeless veterans and one manager. Residents also receive comprehensive wrap-around services to help achieve self-sufficiency. The project was developed by American Family Housing, and built by Del Amo Construction.

The Builder’s Choice & Custom Home Design Awards recognize the projects that transform our cities and help redefine our notion of ‘home.’ Potter’s Lane was one of eleven projects chosen across North America to receive an award. SVA was recognized at the awards ceremony in Washington D.C. on September 6, 21018. Juror Meg Graham stated, “It’s smart, sustainable, and innovative for a market that desperately needs affordable housing.”

Robert Simons, AIA, President of SVA Architects, states, “We are honored that Builder Magazine recognized Potter’s Lane. Not only does this project help address the need for permanent supportive housing for veterans in Orange County, it also will help shape future standards for affordable housing nationwide.”
