The project team’s design for the BSL-3 training facility within the University of California, Irvine campus created an effective environment for biosafety operation and procedure simulations. The facility provides practical training in a real-life setting, without the risks of actual biohazardous materials and the inconvenience of having to shut down and decontaminate fully operational laboratories. The fully-equipped laboratory modules have connecting anterooms, change rooms, and a shower area for protective equipment as well as equipment decontamination areas. The laboratory areas and equipment are directly visible via transparent walls, enabling practical training of students. Additionally, the BSL-3 laboratory is integrated with HD video cameras to facilitate remote training. The project was delivered through design build.
